Rubber compounds for shafts: how to choose the material that works

RECOVERING RUBBER AND POLYURETHANE ROLLERS /

Successful operation of an industrial shaft on the 70% depends on the selection of the right rubber coating. Its chemical composition, hardness and wear resistance determine how long the shaft will perform its function without deformation, cracks or delamination. At Dessa-NV LLC, we work only with proven European suppliers of elastomers - Hexpol, Kraiburg - and select compounds for specific conditions.

🧪 What to consider when choosing rubber for the shaft

Key factors:

  • Operating environment (water, oil, glue, varnish, chemicals)

  • Temperature - constant or cyclic, up to +250 °C

  • Physical stress - pressure, abrasive, surface contact

  • Process type - printing, applying, pressing, material handling

  • Required roughness and profile

🔍 The most popular types of shaft rubbers

Material.

Characteristics

Where it is used

NBR (nitrile)

Resistant to oils, fuels, adhesives

Printing, varnishing, glue application

EPDM

Resists ozone, steam, UV, acids

Food and pharmaceutical industry

SBR

Versatile, inexpensive, moderate wear resistance

Paper and textile industry

PU (polyurethane)

Ultra-high wear resistance, low friction

Metallurgy, transport shafts

Silicone

Temperature-resistant, inert

Food and medical applications

HNBR, FKM, fluoroelastomers

High chemical and temperature resistance

Aerospace, chemical industry

⚙️ What else is important?

  • Hardness: 30 to 95 Shore A - selected according to the load

  • Colour: not only aesthetics, but also a sign of the mixture (EPDM - grey, NBR - black, PU - yellow or green)

  • Adhesion to the rod: ensured by chemical surface preparation

  • Curing method: autoclave or continuous line - depending on the polymer

 Why Dessa-NV LLC?

  • We work with the leaders of the rubber market - a guarantee of quality stability

  • Full cycle: mix selection → surface preparation → rubberisation → vulcanisation → grinding

  • Selection according to drawings or sample

  • Testing the hardness and roughness of the finished shaft
