Technical shaft grinding: precision that determines the result

In industrial production, deviations of even a few hundredths of a millimetre can lead to malfunctions. This is why technical shaft grinding is not a cosmetic treatment, but a critical step in the manufacture and refurbishment of shafts.

At Dessa-NV, this process has been perfected.

🔧 What is technical shaft grinding?

Grinding is the precision machining of a shaft surface that allows you to achieve:

  • perfect geometry and alignment,
  • a given surface profile (straight, bombardment, saddle, cone),
  • of a given degree of roughness - from Ra 0.3 to 2.5 microns,
  • no breakage,
  • profile grooves, spirals, diamonds, etc.

We use high-precision CNC equipment that allows us to process shafts up to 7 metres long and 900 mm in diameter, weighing up to 10 tonnes.

📐 Shaft profiling: more than just grinding

In contrast to conventional grinding, profiling is the creation of a special shape for the working surface of a shaft. Depending on the function of the shaft, we shape:

Profile

Where it is used

Direct

standard surface without material deformation

Bombsuration

pulp and paper production, weaving equipment, packaging and film production

Saddle

Compensation of thermal stresses or edges

Cone/step

Feeding or removing material

Grooves, diamonds, cross notches

for adhesion, glue, lubrication, etc.

🧪 Quality control after grinding

Each shaft is checked for the following after machining:

  • radial and axial runout,
  • imbalance,
  • conformity of the geometry and profile to the drawing,
  • surface roughness,
  • no defects or microcracks.

We use indicator watches, calibres and digital Ra meters.

🏭 Which shafts are used for grinding

  • Rolls for offset, flexo and gravure printing
  • Pressure rollers in the film, paper and textile industry
  • Rollers for applying varnish, glue, grease
  • Transport and guide shafts
  • Grooved shafts for roller systems
  • Shafts coated with NBR, EPDM, PU, silicone
